Week 1 - Self-Study Lessons
This week consists of daily video lectures and written exercises that your young writers can do at home. By week's end they'll have drafted numerous stories that incorporate their new skills. From this sampling they'll choose their favorite story, develop it fully, and bring it to workshop during week 2.
Even students who are familiar with the topics will quickly realize that, as Hemingway said, "We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master. Writing...is something that can be explored and improved over a lifetime."
Week 1 Schedule:
Monday - Showing not Telling
Tuesday - Setting
Wednesday - Point of View
Thursday - Dialogue
This two-week online workshop is a crash-course in writing fiction. Your kiddos will learn how great writing works, how to make the process more fun, and how to keep creativity flowing.
Week 2 - Live Group Workshop
This week we'll read each other's stories and workshop them in an online, video hangout. Your young writers will learn how to give and receive constructive feedback, how to incorporate it into their work, and how to revise for a more effective story. Please note that week 2 involves a real-time conversation and therefore requires participants to sit in front of the computer once a day, at the same time every day.
Two students will have their work critiqued at each workshop, under the guidance of our veteran instructors. Each week, we will introduce new feedback skills and techniques at our meetings.
Week 2 Schedule:
Monday - Workshop 1 - 4PM-5:15PM
Tuesday - Workshop 2 - 4PM-5:15PM
Wednesday - Workshop 3 - 4PM-5:15PM
Thursday - Workshop 4 - 4PM-5:15PM
